Ahsan Bhoon issues legal notice to Captain Safdar over degree allegations
Lawyer leader Ahsan Bhoon has issued a legal notice to Captain (retd) Safdar following allegations that Bhoon holds a fake law degree. The notice asserts that Bhoon obtained his LLB from Punjab University in 1989 and has been a practicing lawyer since, with his credentials formally verified by the university this year. Bhoon has demanded a formal apology and a withdrawal of the statements, warning of criminal proceedings and a claim for Rs500 million in damages if the allegations are not retracted.
Captain (retd) Safdar previously alleged that lawyers with fraudulent degrees are serving on the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP). He specifically challenged the credentials of prominent lawyers, including Bhoon and Amjad Shah, who is contesting the presidency of the Supreme Court Bar Association. Safdar stated he intends to seek verification of degrees for those holding important constitutional positions.
Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar intervened in the dispute, describing Bhoon as a respected member of the legal fraternity. Tarar remarked that Safdar, while a respectable person, is not a lawyer or a member of the bar, and suggested he should refrain from involvement in bar-related matters and elections.
