AI 1980s photo trend raises environmental concerns

A viral social media trend involving the use of AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Midjourney to transform modern photos into 1980s-style retro images is raising environmental concerns. Users achieve this aesthetic by uploading photos and using specific prompts to apply analog film effects, warm lighting, and vintage hairstyles.

While popular on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, the heavy computational requirements of these AI generators have significant ecological costs. Data centers utilizing thousands of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) generate extreme heat, requiring massive amounts of fresh water for evaporative cooling systems to prevent hardware damage.

Research from the University of California, Riverside, and the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH) indicates that processing a single AI-based image instruction can consume approximately 29 milliliters of fresh water directly for server cooling. This intensive resource use contributes to carbon emissions and global warming concerns.
