AI accelerates Ebola response in Democratic Republic of the Congo
Artificial intelligence is being utilized to combat the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. By digitizing the handwritten records of community health workers, the Anthropic Claude model has enabled faster analysis of infection patterns, contact tracing, and patient outcomes.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Africa, the implementation of AI has reduced the time required to produce situation reports from an entire working day to less than one hour. This speed allows health authorities to identify potential outbreak hotspots more accurately and deploy medical supplies to high-risk areas more effectively. The initiative involved collaboration between Anthropic, CEPI, the WHO, and the national biomedical research institute INRB.
