AI accelerates fossil fuel production, increasing net CO2 emissions

New research published in the journal npj Climate Action indicates that artificial intelligence is accelerating fossil fuel production more than it is aiding renewable energy transitions. An international team of researchers modeled 64 scenarios and found that the net impact of AI on carbon emissions is negative, with potential annual increases ranging from 0.47 to 1.8 gigatonnes of CO2.

This increase represents between 1% and 5% of the energy sector's annual emissions. The study highlights that AI boosts productivity in oil and gas through seismic exploration, autonomous drilling, and predictive maintenance for pipelines. These efficiencies lower operational costs and incentivize continued fossil fuel combustion.

Researchers, including former Microsoft sustainability workers, have termed this phenomenon ‘enabled emissions.’ They argue that while tech companies focus on their own operational emissions, they often overlook how their tools facilitate increased greenhouse gas pollution by making fossil fuel extraction more profitable and efficient. The study concludes that the gains in the fossil fuel sector significantly outweigh the productivity benefits AI provides to solar, wind, and other clean technologies.
