Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming China's short-form drama industry, with AI-generated actors achieving commercial success that rivals or exceeds human influencers. A prominent example is the virtual actress Fang Taozi, the protagonist of the short drama 'The Fired Girl.' Fang has amassed millions of followers on platforms like Douyin by presenting a highly realistic persona, including detailed features like skin pores and imperfections that foster public empathy.

The commercial value of AI actors is climbing significantly; Fang's advertising rates for 60-second clips have reportedly surpassed those of real-life influencers with millions of followers. This shift is driven by massive cost savings. While a typical short drama featuring human actors costs approximately 1.5 million yuan, AI-assisted productions like 'The Fired Girl' have been produced for around 110,000 yuan.

Industry data indicates a massive surge in AI integration. The proportion of AI technology used in Chinese short-form dramas rose from 7% last year to 38% this year, with some reports suggesting that over 95% of new productions in the first quarter utilized AI. This rapid transition is causing significant disruption in traditional production hubs like Zhengzhou and Xi'an, leading to job losses for human actors, crew members, and studio staff as the industry shifts toward automated content generation.
