AI adoption creates a growing divide in the global workforce
Recent surveys highlight a growing divide in the workforce regarding artificial intelligence adoption and skill development. Research from Visier indicates that nearly 50% of employees may be exaggerating their proficiency with AI tools. This phenomenon, described as “AI theater,” stems from employees fearing job loss and leaders attempting to demonstrate technological readiness to investors.
Furthermore, a study involving 50,000 workers across 48 countries reveals a widening gap in career prospects. While regular AI users report higher optimism and ambition, a significant portion of the workforce—particularly “engine room workers” with less in-demand skills—is being left behind. Access to necessary learning and development opportunities has dropped from 59% to 51% over the past year.
Experts suggest that to mitigate these issues, organizations should focus on transparent communication regarding how technology affects roles, provide targeted AI training, and foster a culture where employees feel safe discussing the limitations and successes of AI tools.
