AI adoption drives economic potential and professional skill risks

Recent studies and expert analyses highlight a complex transformation of the labor market driven by artificial intelligence. In Italy, AI could potentially generate an added value of 312 billion euros, representing approximately 18.2% of the national GDP. While overall hiring has seen a 24% decline since 2022, experts suggest this is not a simple case of job replacement but rather a redistribution of value. Roles requiring human judgment, responsibility, and trust—such as educators, lawyers, architects, and security professionals—remain highly resistant to automation.

However, the widespread adoption of AI presents long-term risks to professional expertise. Research by Nolan Lovett suggests a phenomenon similar to the ‘tragedy of the commons,’ where individual corporate use of AI may erode the collective knowledge of entire sectors. This occurs through two primary mechanisms: the direct replacement of entry-level positions and a subtle shift where junior employees use AI to reach high productivity levels without undergoing the cognitive training necessary to develop deep expertise. This lack of foundational experience creates a ‘validation tether’ problem, where professionals may eventually lack the skills required to detect errors made by AI systems.
