Anthropic reports $80.7 billion net loss in first half of 2026

AI developer Anthropic reported a net loss of $80.7 billion for the first half of 2026, according to its draft IPO prospectus. This represents a significant increase from the $13 billion loss recorded during the same period the previous year.

The majority of the loss, approximately $72 billion, is attributed to non-cash accounting adjustments related to the fluctuating value of financial instruments, such as convertible bonds, rather than direct operational cash outflows. Despite the reported loss, the company saw substantial revenue growth, reaching $16.3 billion in the first half of the year, a nearly 15-fold increase compared to the $1.1 billion reported in the prior year's first half.

Infrastructure and computing costs are rising sharply, with expenditures reaching $9 billion in the first half of 2026, up from $2.3 billion in the same period last year. Anthropic has committed to significant long-term spending, including approximately $450 billion in non-cancellable cloud computing contracts over the next seven to ten years. These commitments include substantial payments to providers such as Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft.

Following these financial disclosures, some investors are reportedly considering a lower valuation for the company, potentially around $1.5 trillion, down from previous expectations of $2 trillion.
