Meta and Sierra launch Personal Agent Protocol for AI agents
Meta and the AI startup Sierra have introduced the Personal Agent Protocol (PAP), an open standard designed to govern how personal AI agents authenticate and interact with businesses. Supported by partners including Walmart, Stripe, Shopify, and Genesys, the protocol utilizes OAuth-based mechanisms to allow users to grant agents specific permissions, such as read-only access or the ability to execute transactions. Bret Taylor, co-founder of Sierra, noted that the lack of such a standard has created “chaos” in business interactions between humans and AI agents.
The initiative arrives as companies face growing friction with automated agents. Amazon has reportedly begun blocking Meta’s Muse AI agent from navigating its site or making purchases, citing concerns over data scraping. While the protocol aims to provide transparency and control, major industry players like Amazon, OpenAI, and Anthropic have not joined the coalition.
In the broader corporate landscape, AI adoption continues to evolve. In Brazil, a Deloitte study found that 58% of executives report using some form of physical AI in operations, while research from SAP and Oxford Economics indicates that 82% of Brazilian companies have employees using third-party AI tools without formal approval. Meanwhile, Citigroup estimates that Meta’s Muse assistant could generate over $27 billion in annual revenue by 2030.
