AI adoption impacts bank credit ratings and tech sector profitability
Financial institutions are increasingly integrating artificial intelligence, with S&P Global Ratings warning that AI adoption and governance strategies will become critical determinants for bank credit ratings. A survey of 179 financial institutions shows that 84% currently use AI for automation and support functions. Companies expect AI-driven cost savings to reach 4% this year, potentially rising to between 6% and 8% by 2028.
However, analysts urge caution regarding the long-term profitability of the AI boom. BCA Research warns that massive capital expenditures by tech giants like Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet could impact future margins. The firm projects that annual depreciation expenses for these companies will more than double, rising from $255 billion in 2026 to $581 billion by 2029. Total annual spending, including off-balance sheet investments, is estimated to approach $1.4 trillion.
In the United States, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the federal government will not provide legal liability protections to AI developers, emphasizing that companies must remain responsible for the outcomes of their technologies.
