AI adoption in higher education reaches 92% of students

Artificial intelligence is increasingly integrated into educational workflows, with a Digital Education Council survey of over 30,000 respondents from 29 Latin American higher education institutions revealing that 92% of students use AI. Approximately 67% of these students utilize the technology on a daily or weekly basis.

While AI offers efficiency in summarizing texts, explaining concepts, and generating practice exercises, there are significant concerns regarding its impact on cognitive development. About 65% of surveyed students expressed worry that AI might lead to more superficial learning and a reduction in critical thinking or creativity.

Effective use of AI in studying relies heavily on prompt engineering—the ability to provide specific, clear instructions to guide the tool. Rather than using AI to replace the learning process, experts suggest using it to supplement various sources, such as books and class notes, to ensure students continue to engage with different perspectives and original materials.
