Mid-market US firms widely deploy AI but struggle with governance and security

A Censuswide survey of 401 U.S. mid‑market enterprise IT leaders shows that 82% have AI in production, yet only 26% have scaled and governed it across the organization. Respondents cite security, privacy and compliance (19%), data readiness (17%) and integration complexity (16%) as the top barriers. Over 40% reported a confirmed AI‑related security incident in the past year, and another 31% experienced a near‑miss.

Separately, an Ivanti‑administered study of 3,900 employees in six countries finds that 85% of IT professionals say every AI agent has a named owner, but only 42% believe ownership is truly clear. Leaders are twice as likely as other staff to conceal AI use (42% vs. 23%), often citing a “secret advantage.” The research highlights a growing “shadow AI” surface, with thousands of undisclosed AI applications proliferating across endpoints, posing significant governance challenges for security teams.

Both reports underline that while confidence in AI’s ROI is high—96% expect measurable returns within two years—organizations face a widening gap between adoption and effective oversight, raising concerns over data privacy, compliance and operational risk.
