AI adoption reshapes Japan's social media habits amid growing SNS fatigue

A July 2 survey by Onward Holding revealed that about 47% of Japanese social‑media users experience fatigue with platforms such as Instagram and TikTok, citing information overload and declining trust in influencers. The same survey showed a notable rise in AI usage for fashion information, with 32% of respondents reporting increased AI engagement and 17% using conversational AI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini for style advice.

Meanwhile, X (formerly Twitter) has introduced AI‑driven automatic translation and cross‑language recommendation features. These changes enable Japanese posts to appear directly in overseas timelines and foster real‑time cultural exchanges, such as BBQ discussions between Japanese and American users, multilingual Q&A about cosmetics, and the rapid spread of a Korean gaming video to Japanese audiences. Together, the findings illustrate a shift from traditional social‑media consumption toward AI‑enhanced content discovery and creation in Japan.
