AI adoption rises in Albania as Western nations debate development pauses

Data from INSTAT indicates a growing adoption of artificial intelligence among Albanian businesses. In 2026, over 28% of large enterprises—those with more than 250 employees—utilized AI, up from 24.8% in 2025. Small businesses, defined as having 10 to 49 employees, showed the highest growth in technology use, with over 87% utilizing social media for operations.

Simultaneously, public sentiment in Western nations reflects growing apprehension regarding AI development. A survey by Public First across the US, Canada, the UK, France, Spain, and Germany reveals that approximately half of respondents believe AI is sufficiently advanced and support a pause in its development to mitigate risks. In the UK, 51% of respondents supported a pause, while 45% in Germany held similar views. Many citizens expressed greater concern regarding potential job losses than anticipation of new employment opportunities, even if a pause meant falling behind in the global technological race.

These findings emerge as global leaders discuss AI regulation at the United Nations General Assembly. While the European Union has moved toward a regulatory framework with the 2024 AI Act, the tension between ensuring safety and maintaining global competitiveness remains a central challenge for both policymakers and businesses.
