AI adoption trends show divide between developers and marketing professionals
Recent surveys in Japan highlight a divide in how different professional sectors integrate generative AI into their workflows. In software development, advanced organizations are significantly more integrated than the market average. While only 68.5% of general development organizations use AI daily, 99.4% of advanced users do so. Furthermore, advanced developers utilize AI for core processes like implementation and code review at rates of 80% to 90%, whereas general organizations largely limit AI use to information gathering and technical research.
In contrast, a study by the Japan Management Association Research Institute focusing on planning and marketing professionals found that AI-driven efficiency does not necessarily translate into more time for deep thinking. Although AI assists with research and document creation, only 21.5% of respondents reported an increase in time spent on strategic contemplation. Approximately 75.3% reported that their thinking time remained unchanged or decreased.
Key challenges identified include the burden of verifying the accuracy of multiple AI-generated responses and the risk of professionals becoming mere ‘AI operators’ focused on prompting and correcting rather than high-level strategy. The findings suggest that while AI improves task efficiency, the resulting time savings are often offset by increased demands for work quality and the cognitive load of validating AI outputs.
