AI advancements pose new security risks to Bitcoin infrastructure

Bitcoin veteran CobraBitcoin has warned of increasing security risks to the cryptocurrency industry due to the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence models. The concern centers on the ability of frontier AI models to perform autonomous cyber operations, discover software vulnerabilities, and execute complex coding tasks at machine speed.

OpenAI recently released GPT-6 Astra, which the company states has reached a ‘Critical’ cybersecurity capability level under its Preparedness Framework. This indicates the model can discover unknown security flaws and develop exploitation techniques for well-protected systems with minimal human direction. Astra achieved a 100% score on the ExploitBench benchmark and a 42.4% success rate on the more difficult ExploitGym benchmark.

Simultaneously, Anthropic has introduced Claude Fable 5.1, a model designed for long-running agentic coding and managing large codebases. Experts note that because much of Bitcoin’s critical infrastructure—including Bitcoin Core, Lightning implementations, and various wallets—is open-source, it is susceptible to being analyzed and probed by these increasingly capable autonomous systems.
