AI advancements reshape global trade and economic resilience
Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming global trade dynamics, with the value of AI-enabling goods projected to reach USD 3.8 trillion in 2025, doubling from USD 1.9 trillion in 2014. This growth is driven by a complex value chain including semiconductors, cloud services, and data center infrastructure.
While the AI boom offers significant opportunities, it also introduces supply chain risks due to high concentration. Asia currently accounts for approximately 65% of these exports, led by China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and South Korea. The limited number of companies producing advanced semiconductors and memory chips means that any inability to meet rising demand could impact trade values.
For specific economies like Canada, AI breakthroughs present a strategic opportunity to mitigate trade shocks, such as tariffs or import bans. By integrating AI and digital capabilities, exporters can transition to higher-value products—such as autonomous logging equipment or AI-enhanced mineral identification—and expand into digital exports like synthetic data and cloud-based services that bypass traditional physical border constraints.
