AI agent developers diverge on security boundary standards
Recent releases from AI developers show a rapid industry convergence toward a persistent coworker interface, though security boundaries for these autonomous agents remain inconsistent.
SpaceX AI recently launched Grok Bot, which utilizes a sidebar of named teammates that can access tools and continue working independently. Similarly, Nous Research announced that its Hermes Agent v0.20.3 would include a bundled Bot Mode, allowing agent profiles to function as a roster of bots that hand off tasks to one another.
Despite the similar user interfaces, the technical methods for containing risks—such as an error reaching another bot’s credentials or the host computer—differ significantly across projects. Grok Bot establishes its security boundary around the user account, while Hermes draws it around the profile. Other projects, such as OpenClaw and ClawFleet, utilize optional runtime sandboxes or containers to define isolation. This lack of consensus highlights a gap between the rapid development of agent interfaces and the establishment of standardized security identities.
