AI Agent Discovery Standard ARD Gains Backing from GitHub, Google, Microsoft

The Agentic Resource Discovery (ARD) specification is an open, draft standard that defines how AI agents can locate tools, skills, and other agents across federated registries. Developed with participation from Microsoft, Google, GitHub, GoDaddy, Hugging Face and others, ARD specifies a static catalog manifest (ai-catalog.json) and a dynamic search API that returns ranked results based on natural‑language queries.

GitHub has integrated ARD into its Copilot "Agent Finder," allowing Copilot to search a curated catalogue and present ranked matches without pre‑installing resources. Google’s Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform supports ARD with cryptographic verification of publishers, while Microsoft describes it as a response to fragmented AI registries. Hugging Face’s Discover tool provides a reference implementation, exposing search over thousands of skills and MCP servers on the Hub.

ARD is positioned as a shared discovery layer—not a marketplace—so any organization can publish its own catalogue and any agent can query it at runtime, improving scalability and reducing context‑window overhead for large‑scale AI workflows.
