AI agent market intensifies as Wajo and Meta compete on privacy

The market for personal AI agents is emerging as a competitive battlefield, centered on the tension between data utility and user privacy. Wajo, led by former Google and DeepMind engineer Shivani Poddar, is positioning itself through a trust-based architecture. Its agent, Fo, operates via iMessage and WhatsApp to manage tasks such as scheduling, making calls, and handling payments using virtual credit cards. Notably, Fo can hire humans to complete tasks when automation is insufficient.

In contrast, Meta’s new AI agent, Muse, has faced scrutiny regarding its data collection methods. Security researchers discovered that Muse creates automated “relationship pages” for a user’s contacts, mapping social networks and intimacy levels even for individuals who do not use the application. While Meta states that data is isolated within encrypted virtual machines, the aggressive mapping of social circles has raised significant legal concerns regarding GDPR compliance. The service has already encountered friction, including Amazon blocking its access to its platform for security reasons.
