AI agents and Model Context Protocol face security risks

The evolution of artificial intelligence from simple chatbots to autonomous agents capable of executing complex tasks—such as reading emails, querying databases, and using cloud applications—presents significant security challenges. Unlike chatbots that merely respond to queries, AI agents can complete multi-step objectives autonomously, granting them levels of access comparable to high-privilege employees.

Research by independent researcher Syed Anas Mohiuddin has highlighted vulnerabilities within the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard designed to connect language models with external resources like APIs and databases. Mohiuddin demonstrated how attackers can exploit the trust between software components through a form of prompt injection. In these scenarios, a specialized agent might interpret hostile content as a legitimate instruction and pass it to another agent, which then executes the command because it trusts the sender.

These vulnerabilities could lead to unauthorized network requests and the theft of corporate or personal data. The research involved testing agents from various major organizations, including Google, JPMorgan Chase, and Rapid7, as well as government entities in France and the United States.
