AI agents could replace traditional e-commerce checkout processes

The rise of agentic AI is driving a shift in how digital commerce and web infrastructure operate. Stripe President Will Gaybrick suggests that AI agents could eventually replace traditional e-commerce checkout pages. Instead of users navigating shopping carts, agents could execute purchases directly, shifting the design focus from human-centric interfaces to machine-readable technical interfaces.

To support this transition, new tools are emerging to measure website compatibility with AI. Vercel has introduced Is Agentic, a free testing tool that grades websites on their readiness for AI agents based on factors like server-side rendering and document structure. Cloudflare also provides an agent-readiness score. Currently, only four percent of websites use their robots.txt files to specify how AI systems are permitted to use their content.

While there is significant enthusiasm for agentic AI's ability to make autonomous decisions, experts caution against replacing all traditional automation with agents. The most effective approach often involves a combination of agentic AI and established, rule-based automation for predictable processes.
