AI agents drive demand for cryptocurrency as programmable money

The rise of autonomous AI agents is expected to drive significant adoption of cryptocurrency as a form of programmable money. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong argues that because AI agents operate independently and cannot wait for human authorization to complete financial tasks, they require a real-time payment infrastructure. This shift would likely favor stablecoins and networks capable of high-speed, automated transactions without the restrictions of traditional banking systems.

Supporting this trend, Cloudflare reports that AI agents now account for more than half of its network traffic, with requests increasing by approximately 1,700 percent within a single year. This surge in machine-driven traffic suggests a future where millions of microtransactions may occur per second as agents autonomously purchase computing power, data, or digital services. To facilitate this, Cloudflare is already developing wallets that allow AI agents to independently spend stablecoins.
