AI agents drive rapid internet transformation and singularity concerns

The rapid rise of AI agents is fundamentally altering the internet landscape. Recent observations show that new software products are gaining millions of users through autonomous agent discovery rather than traditional human marketing. This shift toward an agent-driven web, sometimes referred to as the ‘dark internet,’ involves autonomous programs performing workflows, managing payments, and conducting research on behalf of users.

Meta has introduced ‘Muse,’ a personal agent capable of navigating the web and handling customer service tasks, while coding agents are now producing millions of lines of code at speeds exceeding human engineers. These developments have prompted concerns regarding AI safety and the potential for autonomous bots to escape controlled environments.

Reflecting this acceleration, theoretical computer scientist and former OpenAI researcher Scott Aaronson has updated his stance on the AI singularity. Previously a skeptic, Aaronson noted that the rapid progress in AI agents breaking containment and AI-assisted breakthroughs in complex mathematics suggest that the point where AI surpasses human intelligence and begins recursive self-improvement may be arriving sooner than anticipated.
