AI agents generate majority of global internet traffic, overtaking human users

Measurements by Cloudflare released in June 2026 show that autonomous artificial‑intelligence agents now account for about 57.4 % of worldwide web traffic, while human‑generated activity has fallen to roughly 42.6 %. This marks a continuation of a trend that began in 2024 when bots first surpassed human traffic at 51 % according to Imperva.

Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince remarked on the shift, saying, “Well, that happened faster than I expected,” after the data showed the milestone arriving two years ahead of earlier forecasts. Regional breakdowns reveal that North America leads the transition with 68.6 % of its traffic coming from AI agents, whereas parts of the United States Midwest still see a human majority. Gibraltar experienced temporary peaks of up to 97 % bot traffic, while countries such as Cuba and Laos remain largely human‑driven.

Analysts note that the rise of AI‑generated traffic raises challenges for cybersecurity, content‑rights management, and infrastructure capacity, as automated requests place increasing demands on servers and bandwidth.
