AI agents now generate most global web traffic

Data from Cloudflare shows that AI‑driven agents and bots accounted for 57.4% of all web requests, surpassing the 42.6% from human users for the first time. Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince announced the shift on X, noting the growth was faster than expected and that the trend is clear despite some data imperfections.

Regional breakdowns reveal that in North America bots make up 68.6% of traffic, while in parts of the U.S. Midwest humans remain the majority. Gibraltar records the highest proportion of bot traffic, whereas Cuba and Laos still see over 80% human‑generated visits. The surge raises questions about advertising revenue, as bots do not click ads, and prompts discussions of new business models such as charging bots for content access. Commentators also reference the “dead internet theory,” which suggested the internet could become dominated by automated activity, a scenario now gaining empirical support.

Prince suggested the shift could herald a new era for the web if mechanisms are found to balance bot usage with human access, potentially reshaping the internet’s economic structure.
