AI agents to transform retail customer journeys

Michael Pietsch, Vice President DACH & Eastern Europe at Box, suggests that AI agents are poised to fundamentally transform the retail customer journey. Instead of manually browsing websites, consumers are increasingly expected to use AI agents to perform research, comparisons, and eventually complete purchases based on specific needs.

This shift toward 'Agentic Commerce' creates a strategic challenge for retailers. While agents require structured data from systems like ERP or PIM to understand technical specifications, they also need context to provide high-quality recommendations. Much of this essential brand and product knowledge—such as brand values and specific use cases—is currently stored in unstructured formats like PDFs, images, and campaign briefings.

To bridge this gap, companies must find ways to make unstructured data accessible so that AI agents can gain reliable context to represent brands effectively.
