AI and Algorithmic Discrimination: Addressing Rights and Equality
As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly autonomous and integrated into societal frameworks, experts are examining how to manage its impact on the social contract and fundamental human rights. The rise of AI agents making consequential decisions necessitates new moral and institutional frameworks to ensure they operate within established legal and cultural norms.
A significant challenge involves algorithmic discrimination, where AI systems may reproduce biases embedded in their training data. During the ‘Closing the Gap on Algorithmic Discrimination’ policy event in Piraeus, representatives from the justice system, law enforcement, and academia discussed risks such as algorithmic errors and the impact of digital tools on fair trials.
To address these issues, the European Handbook on Equality Data was presented. Developed through the DATA EQUALITY project, the handbook provides guidance for organizations on collecting equality data responsibly, protecting privacy, and checking AI results for bias. It emphasizes the importance of human oversight, combining statistical data with lived experiences, and involving affected communities to safeguard equality.
