AI and automation transform LTL freight logistics

The logistics industry is undergoing a digital transformation as artificial intelligence and automation reshape less-than-truckload (LTL) freight management. AI is significantly accelerating the quoting process, moving away from manual email and telephone exchanges toward instant, data-backed pricing. A 2026 industry survey by Boston Consulting Group indicates that over 40% of shippers now consider a provider’s AI capabilities when selecting logistics partners.

Beyond quoting, AI is being utilized for predictive analytics and dynamic pricing, accounting for real-time variables such as lane congestion, capacity fluctuations, and fuel volatility. However, challenges remain in freight audit automation. Effective LTL auditing requires systems specifically designed for the complexities of LTL billing—such as reweigh disputes, accessorial fees, and density calculations—rather than tools merely adapted from truckload models.

Complexity in the sector was further increased on July 19, 2025, when the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) initiated a major overhaul of freight classification, transitioning from a commodity-based system to a density-based one. This shift requires automation platforms to manage both old and new classification standards across various carriers.
