AI and autonomous laboratories transform pharmaceutical research

The pharmaceutical industry is undergoing a shift toward increased automation and artificial intelligence integration. Autonomous laboratories are emerging as a new phase of research, combining robotics, AI, and advanced analytics to create integrated experimental loops. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reported receiving over 500 submissions containing AI components between 2016 and 2023, though these represent submissions with AI elements rather than fully AI-designed drugs. While machine learning can assist in identifying biological targets and proposing molecular structures, experts emphasize that AI's clinically relevant impact remains limited and requires rigorous validation and human oversight to ensure decision-making quality.
