AI and chipmaker stocks see increased hedge fund short bets

Hedge funds increased short positions on several AI-related companies in July, according to data from Hazeltree. Among the top 10 most shorted stocks across its client base were chipmaker Super Micro Computer and AI infrastructure firms Coreweave and Nebius Group.

Investors also reduced long positions and increased short bets on Nvidia, though aggregate fund positioning remained long. This shift occurred amid broader market volatility where U.S. chip stocks fell 20% and South Korea’s Kospi index dropped 22%, marking their largest monthly declines since 2008.

Separately, data from ORATS indicates that AI and hyperscaler companies are disrupting traditional earnings season patterns. Instead of smaller companies driving the largest stock swings, mega-cap AI firms like Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Meta have produced larger-than-average post-earnings moves as investors react to AI capital expenditure levels.
