AI and digital scams targeting elderly populations
Cybercriminals are increasingly using advanced techniques, including AI-assisted romance scams and digital impersonation, to target older adults. Common tactics involve impersonating government agencies such as the IRS, Medicare, or Social Security, as well as financial institutions.
Scammers utilize phishing, smishing (SMS phishing), and spoofing to create a false sense of urgency. They may claim there are unusual transactions, blocked accounts, or security breaches to trick victims into clicking malicious links, providing access codes, or transferring funds. In some cases, scammers use remote access tools to take control of a victim's screen.
To mitigate risks, experts recommend the following precautions:
• Never respond to unsolicited emails or texts by clicking provided links or calling the numbers listed in the message. • Always use official, verifiable contact methods, such as numbers found on physical bank cards or official websites. • Enable account notifications for all withdrawals, transfers, and password changes. • Update login credentials immediately if a security breach is suspected at a financial institution.
