AI and exercise interventions aim to improve cancer survivorship

Researchers are developing new methods to improve the long-term health and quality of life for cancer survivors. At the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, a new AI framework called Precision AI for Survivorship and Supportive Care has been developed. This framework supports the My Wellness Support platform, which uses machine learning to analyze patient-reported outcomes, clinical records, and behavioral data. The system identifies risk patterns to provide personalized educational resources, symptom management, and supportive care recommendations while allowing clinicians to monitor trends via a dedicated dashboard.

Complementary research highlights the biological impact of lifestyle interventions on survivors. Studies indicate that cancer survivors often experience accelerated biological aging and an increased burden of senescent cells due to treatments like chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Evidence suggests that exercise can mitigate these effects by upregulating cellular maintenance processes, potentially slowing epigenetic aging and improving cognitive function. Specifically, randomized trials involving breast cancer survivors have explored how remote exercise interventions can influence these cellular and cognitive outcomes.
