AI and herbal research target global fatty liver crisis
Global fatty liver disease affects approximately 1 billion people, with nearly 30% of adults facing the condition. Because early stages often present no symptoms, the disease can progress silently to cirrhosis or liver cancer.
To combat this, researchers are turning to artificial intelligence as a primary screening tool. New AI models are being developed to analyze electronic medical records, blood biomarkers, and even routine chest X-rays to identify high-risk patients. For instance, a study from Osaka Metropolitan University demonstrated that AI could identify fatty liver with 82% accuracy using standard X-ray images. Additionally, the LiverPRO algorithm developed by Evido, in collaboration with Roche, has shown superior predictive capabilities for severe liver disease in large populations.
In Hong Kong, local research has focused on herbal interventions. A collaboration between the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Royal Medic led to the development of a capsule utilizing milk thistle, hawthorn, schisandra, and bitter melon. Preliminary clinical studies suggest that consistent use may help improve liver waste indicators and assist in managing obesity markers.
