Warhorse Studios co-founder criticizes repetitive RPG tropes

Martin Klima, co-founder of Warhorse Studios, has criticized the current state of the role-playing game (RPG) genre, describing many modern titles as repetitive “power fantasies” designed primarily for teenagers.

In an interview with PC Gamer, Klima expressed fatigue with the common trope of the “chosen one” tasked with saving the universe. He noted that while such themes are not inherently bad, their frequent repetition has become stale. He suggested that while 16 or 17-year-olds may enjoy these narratives, the actual gaming audience has aged significantly and is seeking more mature, diverse experiences.

Klima attributed this lack of innovation to major publishers who prefer to recycle successful formulas to mitigate financial risk. He specifically cited Ubisoft as an example, praising their technical craftsmanship and high production standards while noting that their tendency to reuse similar gameplay concepts can lead to a sense of stagnation.

This desire to move away from traditional tropes was a primary inspiration for the development of the Kingdom Come: Deliverance series, which focuses on a more realistic, grounded medieval perspective.
