AI and mechanical innovation target plastic recycling challenges
Technological innovations, including artificial intelligence and advanced mechanical processes, are being deployed to address the global plastic pollution crisis. In 2019, only 9% of the world's plastics were recycled, while 50% ended up in landfills and 22% was mismanaged as litter. With global plastic use projected to nearly triple by 2060, experts emphasize the need for a more circular life-cycle.
AI-powered robots are currently being tested to improve the efficiency of the sorting process and reduce the carbon footprint of recycling operations. Additionally, mechanical advancements such as high-speed plastic granulators are used to reduce plastic waste into smaller, manageable granules. These granules are subsequently cleaned and processed through extrusion and pelletizing to create reusable materials.
While innovation in waste prevention and recycling patents is accelerating—partly due to policies like the European Single-use Plastics Directive—experts note that industry support is essential for these new technologies to be effectively implemented.
