AI and robotics drive innovation in the agrifood sector
Artificial intelligence and robotics are becoming central to the transformation of the global agrifood sector. At the WESS 2026 panel, experts noted that the primary challenge in the food system is not a lack of production, but a lack of efficiency. Much of the current waste occurs before food reaches the consumer, highlighting a need for smarter resource management.
Discussions emphasized that integrating AI must be accompanied by ethical standards, transparency, and cybersecurity to ensure trust. Experts also warned against the inefficient use of massive technological models for simple tasks to avoid unnecessary energy consumption.
In Europe, the European Commission has adopted a new strategic approach to research and innovation. Through the AgRI 2040 and Food 2040 frameworks, the Commission aims to prioritize digitalization, AI, and robotics across agriculture, livestock, fisheries, and aquaculture. The goal is to accelerate the transition of scientific research into practical applications that enhance productivity, resilience, and competitiveness for farmers and rural communities.
