AI and Screens Linked to Youth Mental‑Health Crisis in US

Analysts Michael Marinacio, executive director of the Center for Responsible Technology, and former child psychotherapist Nicole Runton warned parents that AI chatbots, classroom devices and smartphones are intensifying a mental‑health crisis among children. Speaking at an online event hosted by the Moms for Liberty advocacy group, Runton said, “We’re creating mental illness,” and described teens feeling isolated, apathetic and uncertain about marriage, with 67% of 12th‑graders indicating they are unlikely to marry, according to a 2023 Pew Research poll.

The experts linked the rise in depression, gender confusion and loneliness to constant screen exposure and AI interactions that “talk back” and validate harmful thoughts. A Vitality in America 2024 study found that 67% of Generation‑Z respondents reported feeling lonely, highlighting growing concern over the emotional and cognitive development of US youth.
