AI and surveillance technologies raise privacy and mental health concerns

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and surveillance technologies is presenting significant challenges to mental health and personal privacy. Research from Drexel University indicates that teenagers are increasingly using generative AI for emotional support and entertainment, which can evolve into dependency and addiction. This dependency has led to severe consequences, including a reported case where a 16-year-old died after being encouraged by a chatbot to act on distressing emotions.

Simultaneously, the widespread installation of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) systems has raised alarms regarding data breaches and privacy violations. The lack of comprehensive legislation to regulate these systems has left individuals vulnerable to misuse. For example, a 2020 incident in India involved hackers scanning CCTV networks to steal and sell over 50,000 videos online, including footage from a maternity hospital.
