AI and WebAssembly enable classic video games to run in browsers

Developers are increasingly using artificial intelligence and WebAssembly (WASM) to port classic video games directly to web browsers. This phenomenon allows titles such as ‘Halo: Combat Evolved’, ‘Grand Theft Auto: Vice City’, ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’, and ‘The Simpsons: Hit & Run’ to run within a browser tab without the need for traditional installation or emulators.

AI tools, specifically mentioning Claude Opus, are significantly accelerating the decompilation and code translation processes that previously took months or years. By automating the reconstruction of original game code, developers can more rapidly adapt older software for modern web environments.

Technical advancements like WebGPU are also playing a critical role by allowing browsers to better utilize a computer's graphics card. These ports have demonstrated high performance; for instance, some experiments have achieved up to 240 frames per second, while others have successfully integrated functional online servers.
