AI-assisted reverse engineering unlocks Sony A7C II camera features

A developer has used artificial intelligence to reverse engineer the firmware of the Sony A7C II camera, unlocking features previously restricted by the manufacturer. The custom firmware, known as A7C II Tools (version 3.0), enables the FL2 and FL3 film modes that were hardware-supported but software-locked to differentiate product lines.

In addition to unlocking native modes, the modification allows users to import external LUTs and emulate color profiles from brands like Fujifilm (NC) and Ricoh (GR). The tool also provides customization for electronic shutter sounds and vertical screen display. The latest version features a graphical user interface to simplify the installation and verification process for users.

Technical experts note that AI assists in this process by acting as an efficient reverse engineering assistant, converting machine code into readable assembly or C pseudo-code and locating specific functions within the firmware. However, users are cautioned that third-party firmware modifications carry significant risks, including potential device instability, permanent hardware damage, loss of warranty, and issues with third-party battery recognition.
