AI assists in detecting multiple sclerosis activity

Researchers from the University of Ostrava, Ostrava University Hospital, and VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava have demonstrated that artificial intelligence can serve as a reliable tool in monitoring multiple sclerosis activity. A study published in Scientific Reports shows that automated AI assessments matched expert radiologist evaluations in 91.8 percent of cases.

Neurologist Ondřej Volný noted that while AI is not a replacement for doctors, it acts as a tool to increase precision in tracking disease progression. The technology is particularly valuable during follow-up examinations, where it can assist doctors in identifying subtle changes by comparing current magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans with previous ones. The AI can automatically segment brain lesions, detect new or enlarging lesions, and provide data on brain volume.
