London surgeons perform world's first AI-assisted brain surgery

Neurosurgeons at University College London Hospitals (UCLH) have performed the world's first successful brain surgery assisted by real-time artificial intelligence. The procedure involved the removal of an 11-millimeter pituitary tumor from a 48-year-old patient, Rhys Hibbert.

Unlike traditional medical AI that analyzes pre-operative scans, this system, developed by researchers at University College London (UCL), analyzed live video feeds during the operation. The technology identified and color-coded critical anatomical structures, such as nerves and blood vessels, to warn surgeons of high-risk areas. This real-time guidance was crucial because the pituitary gland is located near vital structures where a deviation of even one millimeter could result in blindness, stroke, or death.

The AI functioned as a supportive tool rather than an autonomous agent, with surgeons maintaining full control over all surgical decisions and movements. Following the procedure, the patient reported significant improvement in his vision and was able to walk independently without assistance.
