AI automation and market saturation challenge global youth employment

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence is reshaping the global labor market, creating significant challenges for recent graduates seeking entry-level positions. In China, an estimated 12.7 million graduates are entering a saturated market where AI is increasingly automating white-collar tasks such as research, programming, and basic analysis. This shift has contributed to high youth unemployment rates, prompting the Chinese government to monitor the situation closely and encourage employers to provide vocational training.

In Hong Kong, the number of full-time vacancies suitable for university graduates has seen a sharp decline, dropping from approximately 80,000 in 2022 to an estimated 31,000 in 2025. Experts suggest that a “dual-track” education model—combining academic study with practical apprenticeship—is necessary to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and industry needs.

Various regions are implementing apprenticeship models to mitigate these risks. In the United States, Silicon Valley firms and technology providers have launched programs that offer paid training and direct pathways to engineering roles. Singapore’s AI Apprenticeship Programme (AIAP) focuses on practical skills like machine learning and model deployment, boasting a employment rate of over 90% for its graduates.
