Healthcare AI coding linked to $942 million in increased medical costs
A report from the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) indicates that the use of artificial intelligence in hospital coding has contributed to an estimated $942 million in additional healthcare costs between 2023 and 2025. The analysis suggests that AI tools, used by more than 60% of hospital systems, are scanning medical records to identify secondary diagnoses that shift patient stays into higher-paying billing categories.
Approximately 70% of these added costs, totaling over $650 million, are attributed to these secondary diagnoses. BCBSA officials noted a disconnect between these increased diagnoses and actual medical treatment; for instance, a rise in anemia diagnoses was observed without a corresponding increase in blood transfusions. This suggests the technology may be identifying more billable conditions rather than documenting sicker patients.
In response to these economic shifts, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis criticized both hospitals and insurers, alleging that AI is being leveraged to maximize reimbursements and deny claims, ultimately driving up insurance premiums. Meanwhile, in Pennsylvania, the House passed a bipartisan bill that would require healthcare facilities to disclose to patients when AI is being utilized for clinical decision-making.
In the cybersecurity sector, Epic Systems is utilizing Anthropic’s Claude AI to detect vulnerabilities and prevent hacking attempts, as the company focuses on tightening security protocols for the medical records of over 325 million patients.
