AI boom creates new generation of Silicon Valley millionaires
The artificial intelligence boom is creating a new generation of millionaires in Silicon Valley, though their spending habits differ significantly from traditional wealthy elites. Employees at leading AI firms like OpenAI and Anthropic are seeing massive wealth accumulation through high salaries and skyrocketing stock values.
Senior managing director at Citizens Private Bank, Garrett Spiker, notes that the Bay Area is experiencing unprecedented liquidity. While senior software engineers often earn base salaries exceeding $300,000, their total compensation can reach eight figures when stock packages are included. In October, over 600 current and former OpenAI employees sold shares totaling $6.6 billion, with some individuals reportedly receiving approximately $30 million each.
Despite this immense wealth, these new millionaires tend to be less ostentatious than their predecessors. Rather than luxury cars or fine art, many prioritize time and practical high-end items, such as expensive espresso machines or electric vehicles. Real estate remains one of the few areas where this group shows significant spending.
