Croatian experts warn AI use may cause cognitive decline
Scientists report that intensive reliance on artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT is linked to a phenomenon they call "cognitive atrophy." Neuro‑scientific and psychological studies show that delegating mental tasks to AI can reduce activity in brain regions responsible for critical thinking, memory and spatial navigation, similar to the loss of hippocampal volume observed in drivers who depended on GPS for years.
The research cites declines in language skills, working memory and IQ scores among students whose essays and problem‑sets are generated by AI. Psychologists warn that outsourcing mental effort to algorithms may erode authentic reasoning, emotional intelligence and long‑term knowledge retention. To counteract these effects, experts recommend habits such as attempting problems unaided before consulting AI, reading printed material, taking handwritten notes and engaging in mental puzzles.
The findings highlight a growing concern that the convenience of AI could lead to what some describe as "digital dementia," urging individuals to set clear boundaries for algorithmic assistance.
