Proofpoint’s 2026 AI‑Era Ransomware Report found that artificial intelligence is making ransomware attacks markedly more effective. Across a survey of 953 security professionals in 12 countries, 65% of organizations hit by ransomware said AI increased the success of the attack, with higher rates of convincing phishing, impersonation and credential‑theft campaigns. In the United Kingdom, 31% reported a significant AI impact, while in Italy 59% of affected firms confirmed the same trend. Spain saw 27% of ransomware victims attribute greater effectiveness to AI tools.

The report notes that attackers now use AI to automate reconnaissance of organisational structures, craft tailored messages and accelerate the deployment of extortion campaigns that go beyond simple file encryption. Sophos’s AI Security 2026 study corroborates the speed dimension, showing that AI can shrink attack timelines from weeks to days and enable rapid iteration of malware components.

Separately, Infobip’s 2026 Fraud & Security Report highlighted a 77% rise in AI‑driven fraudulent traffic and a 71% year‑on‑year increase in AI‑powered fraud‑detection deployments by enterprises. The findings underline a broader shift toward AI‑enabled cyber threats and the parallel scaling of AI defenses across sectors.
