AI cameras reduce suicide-related metro incidents in Stockholm
A study conducted by Karolinska Institutet and SL indicates that AI-powered cameras in the Stockholm metro system have significantly reduced the number of track-related incidents caused by suicide or suicidal behavior. The technology, implemented at 14 stations in 2021, scans platforms and track areas for risky behaviors, such as standing too close to the edge. When risks are detected, the system alerts a security center, which can then instruct train drivers to slow down or dispatch personnel to the site.
Johan Fredin-Knutzén, a researcher at the National Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention, noted that this is the first study in the world to evaluate this specific measure. The analysis also found no evidence that these incidents simply shifted to nearby stations.
While the AI cameras show success in specific transit environments, broader discussions regarding public safety in Sweden emphasize that technology alone is limited. Research suggests that while cameras are effective in controlled settings like parking garages, they lack the human ability to interpret social cues or de-escalate tension in dynamic public spaces. Experts suggest that true security requires a combination of technical surveillance and human presence, such as trained security guards, to provide proactive intervention.
