AI chatbots become modern Cyrano for U.S. daters
Singles such as San Francisco‑based Marie Lansley are turning to AI chatbots—including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, Google’s Gemini and Elon Musk’s Grok—to draft opening lines, interpret replies and even receive relationship advice. Lansley said, “AI is great at making dating more efficient. But the chemistry—that’s always going to be analog.” Dating coach Carey Gaynes likened the technology to “the new Cyrano,” noting that chatbots can provide a voice for users who struggle with conversation starters.
Users report mixed experiences: some appreciate AI‑generated icebreakers and even AI‑written farewell messages to avoid “ghosting,” while others fear overreliance and loss of creativity. A Pew Research Centre survey found 53 % of U.S. adults believe AI will worsen people’s ability to think creatively, and about half think it could harm the formation of meaningful relationships. The trend reflects a broader integration of AI into the dating industry, with chatbots now featured in app onboarding and TikTok content from companies like ChatGPT and Gemini.
